Another good Wilner column. Interesting question posed re how much Oregon and uw are paying.

Your right, a good artical with lots of short comentary on each coach.

Interesting question, like you point out. UW and Oregon have two distent approaches but then the two schools seem to have two different "wants". UW wants to just play football and Oregon despertly wants a national championship. You can see that "just playing football" is a lot cheeper then "despertly wanting a national championship". Hopefully both schools will obtain their goal.

Which in my opinion makes Oregon's hiring of Lanning even more puzzling. But when you are desperate everything looks good.

Nick Saban and Sleaze Meyer won their FIRST national championships at their SECOND P5 head coaching jobs. Kirby Smart was hired at Georgia the same year Helfraud was fired at Oregon(2016) and he just won his first national championship. Dabo Swinney began as head coach at Clemson in 2009 and won his first national championship in 2016.

Considering the Pac-12 can't even field a team in the Playoffs; Oregon is not the best team in the Conference and Lanning is the least experienced head coach...those dots don't suggest "National Champion" happening anytime soon.

A couple of things to note: I think you're right on both counts. It's not going to happen anytime soon, and one must keep in mind that just like "star" ratings for players, coaches come in different categories of greatness also and it matters. For example:  your not going to win a national championship without lots of 5 and 4 star players on your team and you're not going to win a national championship without a 5 star head coach. A 4 star head coach may get you there but to win you have to be a 5 star head coach. Oregon has seen that and so has Washington, (not to mention USC).

So here is my point, to win a national championship one must always be having lots of 5 and  4 star players coming into the program and must also be in play for the 5 star coaches that are available. Lanning is a 5 star defensive coach and he may be a 5 star head coach, we just don't know yet.

As you point out the big questions are, can Lanning get to the 5 star head coach rating, and will Oregon give Lanning the time he may need to get a national championship ??

Oregon seems to be reacting like time is running out, and for our uncle it is.
